Join us for a transformative art workshop that delves into the interplay of light and shadow, where participants will explore the nuances of composition.

This immersive experience is designed for everyone who wishes to enhance their understanding of how light influences perception in art, particularly within monochromatic compositions.

Workshop Structure:

1. Introduction to Light in Art:

  • We will begin with a brief lecture that introduces the concept of light in art, discussing its historical significance and its role in creating mood, depth, and focus within a composition.
  • Explore the theories behind chiaroscuro and sfumato and how they can be utilized effectively in designing. 

2. Materials Overview:

  • Participants will receive a materials list prior to the workshop. Key supplies include:

    • Acrylic paints (limited palette to work light only)
    • Various brushes (flat, round, and detail)
    • Canvas 32 x 21 cm
    • Palette for mixing
    • Water containers for cleaning brushes
    • Rags or paper towels

  • A demonstration of how to properly set up your workspace will be provided.

3. Live Demonstration:

  • Ernesto de La Rosa  experienced instructor will conduct a live painting demonstration, and explain the theory behind achieving numerous effects and results    
  • The instructor will guide participants through the process of sketching a local scene, focusing on how to identify and map out light sources and shadows.

4. Hands-On Painting Session:

  • Participants will then embark on their own painting journey, applying the techniques learned during the demonstration.
  • Throughout this session, the instructor will circulate, offering personalized feedback and guidance as artists experiment with their interpretations of light and shadow.
  • Emphasis will be placed on understanding how to create depth and dimension in their work by manipulating values and contrasts.

5. Group Critique and Discussion:

  • After the painting session, participants will come together to showcase their work. A constructive group critique will allow artists to share their experiences and insights gained throughout the process.
  • The instructor will facilitate a discussion on the challenges faced and the breakthroughs achieved, reinforcing the educational value of shared perspectives.
