¡Buenos dias! Lots to talk about this morning. First, we got really lucky again yesterday as satellite images (see below…first image is at 11:30 am and second is at 2:30 pm) show how substantial midday high clouds over our region rapidly dissipated, leaving a huge clear area centered on La Ventana. The wind gauge at the campground recorded 10-minute average sustained winds of 16-19 mph from noon until 2 pm, then winds increased to 19-22 mph from 2 pm until around 4:30 pm as our local thermal fully kicked in and gave us a beautiful afternoon on the water. On to the next phase…model forecasts that came in yesterday afternoon showed wind speed forecasts had increased substantially for today, and for those of us located up the hill a bit, norte conditions began shortly after sunset with WNW to NW winds gusting into the low to mid 20 mph range all night. Models are in good agreement that norte conditions will continue today, and they also show a strong west component which will likely lead to widespread gusty conditions and wind-shadowing, with the worst of it on northern beaches. The norte is forecast to ease on Saturday as the surface high centered far to our north begins to weaken a bit, but with solid north flow continuing and at least some filtered sunshine, we should see a windy afternoon. The surface pressure gradient will become weak on Sunday and continue weak into Monday, with only light afternoon breezes expected here. Suface high pressure is forecast to again build into the interior west of the U.S. on Tuesday with north background flow increasing. At this point it looks like sufficient north flow should continue into Wednesday, then a weak surface low just offshore of the northern Baja Peninsula on Thursday may begin to weaken our winds.
