La Ventana Stories

An ongoing series of write-ups about the history and the happenings of La Ventana Bay and the surrounding region. Recent highlights:

Meet the Owners: Baja Pet Rescue - La Ventana can be a true dog heaven. However, some dogs face rough beginnings, which is why Danielle Gee, who found her way here from Canada, stepped up to help when the community needed it most. What started in 2020 as simply helping a few people rehome dogs during the pandemic has grown into Baja Pet Rescue (BPR), a grassroots effort born from necessity and fueled by determination. (by Natalie Smith)

All Things Reptile: Geckos of Baja California Sur - Here in LV/ES, we have three species of gecko, and hopefully this column can help you tell the difference!  (by Chance Stevens)

Observing the Reef: Oarfish Rescue Video Series & Beaching Awareness Project - What’s an Oarfish you may ask? Here’s what they look like. Oarfish are rare deep-water filter feeders that live at depths of 600-3000ft. and grow as long as 36-feet. Sometimes, they get beached along the shoreline. I’ve had two encounters where I swam each fish out to sea, as documented in Oarfish Rescue (Spanish: Recate Read More (by William Ihne)

The Sea Around Us: Mako Sharks - Last December we encountered a mako shark swimming at the surface, I had seen a couple before, but not like this. We stopped the motor and watched it swim around our boat, coming back and forth slowly, very relaxed, and curious. It looked like it had a malformation on its spine, which probably explains its behavior. (by María Rodriguez-Salinas)

Bird's Eye View: Attracting Birds to Your Yard - In the last two to three years, several studies have been published in scientific journals suggesting that having nature, for example singing birds, in your immediate environment can lead to greater well-being and health and overall life enrichment and even a prolonging of life. (by David Bird)

History of La Ventana: The Cabalerra de Cerralvo (Part 2) - From El Sargento and La Ventana, you can watch shadows paint Isla Cerralvo a changing hew of colors from sunrise to sunset. The island provides beautiful views, but it also conceals many tales. The Caballera de Cerralvo, told here for the first time, is one of them. (by Tom Spradley)
